The team at Melbourne Brewery Tours want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Hopefully it’s one that is filled with great people, great times and even greater beer. If you are stuck with ideas of what to drink when the 25th comes around, we’ve compiled a list of the essential beers to enjoy with Christmas lunch.
Starter: Stone and Wood Pacific Ale – Possibly the essential beer for any hot summer’s day, Pacific Ale is the perfect beer to start the Christmas festivities the right way. Cloudy in appearance with a lively carbonation and light bitterness, this is the kind of brew that goes down quick and easily from start to finish. The late addition of Galaxy hops produces tropical fruit notes in this beer that make for one tasty summer delight.
Seafood: Hargreaves Hill Hefeweizen – There’s no better way to start a Christmas lunch than with some barbecued seafood paired perfectly with an Australian made wheat beer. This Hefeweizen has a sweet citrus aroma and a slight taste of banana and cloves. The prominence of yeast esters in this German-style beer help bring out the natural sweetness in Australian shellfish like prawns and crayfish. If you are fancy enough to start the meal with a course of oysters then a good wheat beer helps bring out the salinity of such a delicacy.
Roast Turkey: Pirate Life Pale Ale – Christmas lunch is one of the few occasions where Australian’s gather around to enjoy a roast turkey. Luckily American style pale ales match perfectly with game meats as their malt profile complement the roasted notes while the bitterness of hops helps cut through the fat. Pirate Life Brewing’s pale ale is one of the best pales currently on the market in Australia with a strong focus on American hops. Additionally, the fact that they come in a cans make it a great beer to stock the bar fridge full with.
Dessert: Red Hill Brewery Christmas Ale – While this may be an obvious choice, you don’t want to miss out on this fantastic annual release by Red Hill. A Belgian style strong ale, which pours a deep orange colour with a creamy head, this is a beer that is quite literally created to be served with Christmas pudding. The spicy hop aromas derived from European noble hops matched with a complex malty finish create a rich and satisfying beer that really enhance a dessert soaked in brandy.
Nightcap: Boatrocker’s Roger Ramjet – The food may be finished but that doesn’t mean that the beer needs to stop following. Roger Ramjet is an imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, which creates a thick and creamy beer that has aromas of coffee and dark chocolate. Complex flavours have been able to develop from the barrel-aging, with notes of bourbon, raisons, molasses and a highly bitter finish. With strong flavours, an aromatic intensity and complexity in bounds this is the perfect drink to finish your Christmas session on!
Did we leave any great beers out? We think these are easily the best beers to share with Christmas lunch but when it comes to beer there are no right or wrong answers – let us know what else should be on the list!
